December 12th - December 16th

One week left till break!

Special thanks to all the families that came last Friday to our first Christmas Singing Pageant. I think it is safe to say that a new SUMC tradition has been created!   It was a little crazy, but wonderful in so many ways.  Family get-togethers are my favorite and it was amazing to be in the sanctuary with close to 100% of our families participating.  This is what I love most about SUMC....being in the presence of families that love and cherish their children the way our parents do.

This week:

  • Letters to Santa
  • Reindeer
  • Holiday Celebration (Thursday or Friday)
Book Exchange

Thursday - T/TH Class
Friday - MWF Class

Please bring one new or better yet, gently used book to class on your day.  Please wrap the book in holiday paper....please NO ribbons or bows..... please write inside the book ..."From your friend ________."   Please discuss with your child that this will be a present for a friend.  We will have a fun way to exchange the books.

**********
If over break you happen to come into possession with any of the following and you don't need them, please consider donating them to the school...believe it or not, the kiddos will love playing with these:

  • large boxes - (from appliances)
  • packing peanuts -(especially the ones made from corn...they will become sticky when wet)
  • bubble wrap - our goal is to cover the track on the playground and drive bikes and scooters over it!

December 5th-December 9th

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!  It's not chilly...it's cold.  Feel free to bundle up your kiddo for the ride to school....but please make sure their outerwear , (jacket or sweater), is labeled inside the collar.  Also, if they wear the extras such as scarves, hats or mittens, please help them to put those items away in their backpack.  Let them know they will not need them for recess.  Keeping track of all the extra items either in the classroom or out on the playground can be difficult and they can be cumbersome on the playground.  If the weather requires these added items, we will probably just stay inside that day!

This week......Gingerbread!  Oh no, the gingerbread man ran away......have you seen him?   Our classroom will smell quite yummy!

We are practicing every class for our performance of Jingle Bells.  We can't wait to show you this coming Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 at our Holiday Night Christmas Pageant.  Please see me if you have any questions.

November 27th - December 2nd

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  Now that the turkey and pumpkin pie are in the past, it is time for.....GLITTER and all that sparkles.......

Why wait for the official start of December....we will kick off the holiday season this week.

On Monday, all classes will get together with Pastor Cindy in the sanctuary for a short time.  This is where we are going to have our Christmas Pageant and we want everyone to be familiar and feel comfortable in the space prior to our big performance.  Both of my classes will be singing the song "Jingle Bells".  We will be practicing a lot so you might hear it often at home.  Thank you in advance for your encouragement.

Christmas Pageant - Friday, December 9th 6:00-8:00

Come join us for an evening of carols song by the children of SUMC!  Afterwards, enjoy milk and cookies in Burgess Hall.

November 7-November 11th

Glad to see so many at our field trip last Friday. I hope everyone had a great time.  If you did not make it and have never been to the Children's Museum of Phoenix, in a nutshell...you need to go!  Next week, every cubbie will have a coupon good for one free child admission...take advantage!

With the weather dramatically cooler this next week, especially in the morning, your kiddo may come to school with a coat.  Please label all extra articles of clothing with your student's last name.  Feel free to grab a sharpie in the classroom.

No school this Friday, November 11th in honor of our Veterans. Thank you for your service!

This is a tradition at SUMC that is one of my favorites.  Thanksgiving is a time when we get together with family and friends, take time out to reflect on all things we are thankful for and EAT!  This is your chance to get together with your SUMC family and share a dish that is traditional for your family this time of year.  Whether it is an appetizer, side or dessert, we want to try it!  Please bring enough to feed 8 people.  Are Grandparents or other special relatives coming into town for the holiday?  If so, we would love to have them join us.  All we ask is that if extended family are planning to come, please consider bringing a little more to share.

RSVP's and sign-ups will be available next week.

October 31st - November 4th

Monday - Halloween Celebration with open rooms!

Planting pumpkin seeds
Tasting roasted pumpkin seeds

Friday - Field Trip to Children's Museum of Phoenix
Cost is $7.00 if paid by Wednesday.  Cost is $15.00 per person at the door.
Meet out front by 9:30 then you are welcome to stay for as long as you'd like.

Please read the Constant Contact message sent out from Amy earlier today.  It is a great reminder of several important dates we have coming up this month.

Sneezing and Coughing and Snot! Oh My!!

Coughing and Sneezing and Snot...Oh My!!!

At preschool, we share everything, and right now, there seems to be a lot of germs going around.  Time to review SUMC's sick child policy.
Of course the obvious:  We consider these red lights.  Your child MAY NOT come to school if:
  • Fever!  Your child must be fever free for 24 hours WITHOUT medication prior to returning to school.
  • No vomiting or diarrhea
  • No discharge from eyes
  • No rash that is not scabbed over
  • excessive coughing or runny nose that the child is not able to contain themselves.  I admit this is somewhat of a shady area.  We are working on covering our cough and wiping our nose ourselves.  This is a task that would benefit your child to work on at home as well.  If your child is unable to take care of this themselves, I will help them, but with other students in the class an adult will not always be right there.  Excessive coughing or runny nose may result in a phone call from the school to come and pick up your child.

Now yellow lights.....symptoms or times when your child maybe should not be a school

  • If child has symptoms of illness or injury that will keep them from being a happy and active participant at school that day.
  • child is very tired
  • child is complaining of a tummy ache
  • child is having a "rough morning"

If you keep your child home from school due to illness, it is imperative to call the school and report the absence.  If you leave a message, please state your name, your child's name, child's class, and reason for absence.  Please make sure to state if your child has a fever over 101 degrees.  We are required by the State of AZ to report certain illnesses, post certain communicable diseases and to help inform fellow parents of illnesses that may be spreading through the school.  Also, if we see a pattern of illness, it allows us to develop a game plan for proper elimination of unwanted germs.

Speaking of game plan....this Saturday, November 5th is another room clean.  Our classroom would really benefit from a good deep clean.  Time is 7:30 am.  We are usually out by 10:00.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!
Kate

October 17th - October 21st

Welcome Back!  Hope everyone had a wonderful Fall Break.

This week marks the kick-off to the holiday season with a celebration of Halloween.  I like to stick to a fun theme...definitely nothing scary...maybe a little spooky..but not scary.
For the next couple of weeks our learning will center around more non-fiction themes.   We will also  spend a lot of time discussing real vs. pretend.  Halloween is EVERYWHERE these days.  Did you know more money is spent on Halloween decorations now than Christmas?  There is a variety of decorations out there from the whimsical to very realistic and downright scary.  This can be a scary time for a two or three year old.  One minute they are having fun with it all and the next...watch out they are freaking out!  To a small child, many of these decorations blur the lines between real and pretend.  Some kiddos are able to be exposed to much more than their peers.  This is also a common age for kiddos to experience bad dreams.  So, on this note, be careful out there...have fun carving pumpkins, roasting the seeds, hanging decorations in your windows and best of all...GASP.... figure out how to make your own costume from stuff you have around your house!  (does anyone beside me remember doing that as a kid?)

Winter Lawn Part 2...

The lawn crew will meet at 9am this Saturday to over seed the playground.  Again, thanks to anyone who can assist us with this project!

Winter Lawn at SUMC

Dear Families,

October in the Phoenix metropolitan area means many things, one of which is if you want to have green grass in the winter, it's out with the bermuda...in with the rye...over seeding is our fall yard chore, our version of raking the leaves that have fallen from the trees in our yard.

In an effort to save money, in the past we have skipped the over seeding process and quickly regretted this decision.  Our mostly green lawn quickly turns brown and creates dust, mud, and major allergy issues for a number of our kiddos  (and this teacher!).

We are reaching out to our families and asking for your help.  We are planning on over seeding the lawn this Saturday starting at 9am.  We realize this is the start of Fall Break and you may have plans.  We are hoping the break will give the grass seed a fighting chance against the stampede of little feet.  If you are able to help, please let Amy or myself know.

p.s. This counts as a work day !!!!

??????? - feel free to ask me!

Thanks so much!

September 26th- September 30th

This week we are finishing up our apple unit.  We are making our own version of the Dr. Seuss classic Ten Apples Up On Top.  The MWF class made apple chips on Friday and will get to taste test them on Monday.

Color of the Week - Purple- don't forget your purple contribution to our class collage.

We will finish up the week and our fall color study experimenting with the three primary colors to see how many shades of secondary colors we can make.

A special WOO WOO Award goes out to the parents who were able to participate in last Saturdays work party.  To be honest, I was a little concerned at first because not that many came...but boy were they worker bees!  Toys and chairs were sanitized inside and the playground looks AMAZING!!  The garden is prepped and ready for planting.  Hopefully we will get some seeds and plants in within the next couple weeks.  Thank you,...we recognize and know Saturday morning are precious...it makes us as a staff feel very good when you take the time out of your busy lives to give that little extra to the kiddos.  In their own special way they really do appreciate it!

Next work party is Saturday, November 5th...if you just can't wait that long, there is a good possibility we will be looking for a few grass/landscaping fairies to help us over seed the playground on Saturday, October 8th...more info to come....

Work Party #1 –This Saturday, September 24th

Being a co-op, our monthly tuition is lower than other schools because our families “work” at our school completing  tasks that otherwise would have be hired out.  Working in the classroom as “Teacher’s Aides” is one example.  Another example is participating in our work parties.  During work days, our families complete tasks such as sanitizing toys, tables and surfaces in the classrooms.  Outside, they roto-till the sand and wood chips, paint equipment, pull weeds, wash windows etc.  These are all tasks that are done for the safety of our kiddos.  Each family is responsible for participating in two work days per year.
Remember these tips for your work party day...
  • Wear appropriate clothing and shoes (get ready to get dirty and grimy!)
  • Leave the kiddos at home..sharp tools, lawn equipment, bleach and kiddos do not mix!
  • Check out our "to-do" list posted outside room 4 and 5. Bring any tools or equipment you think you will need.
  • ???????  Please ask either myself or Amy in the office.

September 12th-16th

Happy Monday Everyone!

Last week the MWF class made a class book themed after the ever loved Mo Willems book Don't Let The Pigeon Drive the Bus.  We asked ourselves where does the pigeon want to drive the bus?   We got some great answers.  Be sure to read it the next time you work in the classroom!

This week we will continue our transportation theme with crafts and activities centered around trains, boats and planes.

Our Color of the week is  orange!...remember something for the class collage.
  • How do you make orange?  Having covered the world of primary colors, (red, yellow, blue), we will now move onto secondary colors and the combination of primary colors that create them.

Friday is yoga day.  Please be sure to dress you child in clothes that don't hinder their ability to crawl, slither, stretch or jump.  (simple shorts, t-shirts, or  loose pants work best ...dresses not so much) - Thanks!!

Speaking of yoga....in case you are not able to co-op on Fridays, this is your chance to meet and participate in a Fitness Fusion class taught by Yogini Jeanie.  This Friday evening please join us for our first Learn n' Burn of the year.

Date & Time:          Friday, September 16th Check-In time is 5:45*
Where:                    Burgess Hall
What:                      Parents participate in a 45 minute Fitness Fusion class then can leave the kiddos with us and go have some adult time.  Kiddos must be picked up no later than 8:30.  You  must  participate in the parent education class in order to take advantage of the free babysitting!

RSVP to Amy in the office - space is limited!!!

September 5th - 9th

Hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day Weekend!!!

Can you believe it is September?  Soon we will all be wearing coats and watching the leaves change.  We will harvest apples and the smell of a burning chimney will permeate the air.  Oh wait....we live in southern Arizona....soon we will be able to drive with our AC off and windows open (if it is before 9 am), and we won't be able to swim because the water temperature in the pool will fall below 80 degrees BURRRRRR.  Oh well, at least we can welcome fall along with everyone else and enjoy baseball...
GO D-BACKS, and football...GO CARDINALS!!!

During this short week, we will concentrate on the following...

Color of the week is BLUE
  • Bring something from home to add to our class collage!

Transportation
  • cars, planes, boats, horse  -
    • How do you get to school? To the park?
    • How does your family get the food you eat?

GREAT NEWS!!!  The weather forecast is cooler some days this week.  I am really hoping for some more outside time.  Can you tell these kids have been cooped up a lot?
